Locally-led change and Great Start
The Great Start journey began when staff from the Barnardos organisation began knocking on 1,200 doors in the Hutt City suburb of Taita and started conversations with the local people.
Taita residents talked about wanting to be better connected with other residents and existing local services. Barnardos listened and supported the creation of an innovative community hub known as ‘Great Start’.
Supported by the Great Start team, a wide range of resident-led activities and projects have been established and collaboration between service providers and the local community has grown.
Great Start Charitable Trust became its own legal entity in 2013 and became governed by a locally-based Board of Trustees. It was then no longer ‘held’ or managed by Barnardos.
Great Start closed its doors in 2017, but you can check out what they got up to on the Great Start Facebook page.
